Bodhicaryāvatāra 5.12cd

mārite krodhacitte tu māritā sarvaśatravaḥ ||

Traditional Translation:

ཁྲོ་བའི་སེམས་འདི་གཅིག་བཅོམ་ན།།
དགྲ་དེ་ཐམས་ཅད་ཆོམས་དང་འདྲ།།

My translation:

ཁྲོ་བའི་སེམས་ནི་བཅོམ་པ་ན།།
དགྲ་རྣམས་ཐམས་ཅད་བཅོམ་པ་ཡིན།།
My translation (a) renders the locative absolute better, (b) does not add anything, (c) is faithful to the Sanskrit, and (d) yet conveys the sense quite well. The only problem is of tu, which has not been rendered.

Bodhicaryāvatāra 5.1

śikṣāṃ rakṣitukāmena 
cittaṃ rakṣyaṃ prayatnataḥ  |
na śikṣā rakṣituṃ śakyā 
calaṃ <acc. to Tib. ayam> cittam arakṣatā ||

One desirous of guarding [one’s] precept
Should diligently guard [one’s] mind.
One who is not able to

Bodhicaryāvatāra 4.46d

kleśāḥ prajñādṛṣṭisādhyā varākāḥ || Bodhicaryāvatāra 4.46d

nyon mongs myon mongs shes rab mig gis spang ||

1. Tibetan tr. has nyon mongs nyon mongs. We have no correspondence for varāka. May be one nyon mongs is supposed to render varāka?
2. Of course dṛṣṭi can also mean “eye” (MW). But it also means lta ba, mthong ba, etc.
3. Tibetan spang gives one a different idea of syntax. The Sanskrit has a nominal construction? I.e. “Kleśas are wretched ones that are to be subdued/tackled by a [stern] gaze of prajñā.”
Would the following Tibetan be closer to the Sanskrit sense?


nyon mongs rnams ni ni shes rab kyi mig gis tshar gcad par bya ba’i tha shal ba rnams yin no.

Bodhicaryāvatāra 5.75

subhāṣiteṣu sarveṣu 
sādhukāram udīrayet |
puṇyakāriṇam ālokya 
stutibhiḥ saṃpraharṣayet || (Bodhicaryāvatāra 5.75)

A revised Tibetan translation by myself:

ལེགས་པར་བཤད་པ་ཐམས་ཅད་ལ།།
ལེགས་སོ་ཞེས་ནི་བརྗོད་པར་བྱ།།
བསོད་ནམས་བྱེད་པ་མཐོང་གྱུར་ནས།།
བསྟོད་པས་སྤྲོ་བ་བསྐྱེད་པར་བྱ།།

This is my English translation (which is not good but close to source text):

To all that is well-said,
One should express compliment.
Having seen an act of wholesome deeds,
One should encourage with eulogy.

This is the traditional translation:


ལེགས་པར་སྨྲས་པ་ཐམས་ཅད་ལ།།
དགེ་བར་གསུངས་ཞེས་ནི་བརྗོད་པར་བྱ།།
བསོད་ནམས་བྱེད་པ་མཐོང་གྱུར་ན།།
བསྟོད་པས་ལེགས་པར་དགའ་བ་བསྐྱེད།།

The first 2 pādas are good. The conditional is good in Tibetan but that is not what the Sanskrit text says.
